This week (from March 10th – 16th), we’re joining the rest of the UK in celebrating Compost Week 2025, an annual initiative designed to highlight the environmental benefits of composting and inspire more people to give it a go in their own gardens.
As a company committed to sustainability and eco-friendly living, we fully support anything that helps create a healthier planet and UK Compost Week does just that by educating people on how composting organic waste can enrich soil, reduce landfill waste and contribute to a greener future.
But why is composting so important? Let’s dive into the benefits!
The Benefits of Composting.
Composting isn’t just good for your garden, it’s great for the environment too! Here’s why:
🌱 Reduces Landfill Waste – Organic materials like fruit and vegetable scraps, teabags and grass clippings make up a large portion of household waste. Composting diverts this from landfills, reducing methane emissions and overall waste.
🌱 Improves Soil Health – Compost provides essential nutrients, enhances soil structure and promotes beneficial microbial activity, leading to healthier plants and stronger growth.
💧 Conserves Water – Compost improves soil moisture retention, reducing the need for frequent watering and helping to conserve this valuable resource.
🌎 Lowers Your Carbon Footprint – By using compost instead of chemical fertilisers (which require energy-intensive production and transport), you can help cut down greenhouse gas emissions while promoting a circular approach to waste management.

How to Start Your Own Compost Heap.
Creating a compost heap in your garden is simple and rewarding! Here’s how to get started:
1️⃣ Find the Right Spot – Choose a level, well-drained area for your compost bin or heap. Placing it directly on soil allows beneficial organisms to aid decomposition.
2️⃣ Gather Your Materials – Compost works best with a balance of ‘greens’ (nitrogen-rich materials like fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and grass clippings) and ‘browns’ (carbon-rich materials including cardboard, paper, dried leaves or wood chips). For the best results, aim for 25% greens and 75% browns.
3️⃣ Layer It Up – Start with coarse materials like twigs to help with airflow, then alternate layers of greens and browns. Shredding materials speeds up decomposition.
4️⃣ Maintain Moisture & Airflow – Keep the pile damp (like a wrung-out sponge) and turn it regularly to introduce oxygen, which is key for the composting process.
5️⃣ Wait & Watch – With the right balance, your compost could be ready in just a few weeks! It’s finished when it looks like dark, crumbly soil with a fresh, earthy smell.
💡 Tip: While a simple compost heap works, using a bin keeps things tidy. You can buy compost bins from garden centres or make one yourself using wooden pallets!
