With World Environment Day – a day dedicated to promoting the importance of protecting our environment – taking place recently, we’ve been reflecting on the beauty of the natural surroundings at our developments around the south and south-east of England. As a result, we’ve gone one further and compiled a list of our top three outdoor activities to try at each one!
This week, we’re turning our attention to our charming Sutherland Park development in Hythe, Kent. So what exactly does this delightful market town have to offer outdoor enthusiasts? Read on to find out!
1. Hythe Sound Mirrors
A short journey west of Hythe, perched above the Royal Military Canal, stand the Hythe Sound Mirrors, fascinating remnants of the World Wars – and an absolute must for military and/or history buffs!
Built to capture the sound of approaching enemy aircraft and alert defence operators, these two concrete dishes stand at 30 and 20 feet tall, respectively, and represent a significant scientific achievement. Reaching these ‘concrete ears’ involves a simple uphill walk from the nearby canal towpath, and rewards visitors with breathtaking views over Romney Marsh, the English Channel and even France (weather permitting!).
Ingenious and ever-so-slightly eerie, the Hythe Sound Mirrors offer visitors a captivating step back in time.
2. Brockhill Country Park – Nature on Your Doorstep
Just a couple of miles from Sutherland Park, Brockhill Country Park is home to 54 acres of woodlands, meadows and a tranquil lake.
Visitors will find several walking trails ranging from modest three mile routes to trickier six mile treks, but those who prefer more sedate activities are well catered-for too, with an abundance of wildlife to admire, numerous birdwatching opportunities and a miniature railway.
Throw in plenty of green open spaces, play areas, picnic spots and a cafe and you’ve got all the ingredients for a perfect day out right on your doorstep!
3. Scenic Canal Walk, Boat Hire… and A Floating Festival!
The Royal Military Canal is one of Hythe’s many gems. A leisurely walk along its peaceful towpath allows you to appreciate the local area’s history and flora – including national rarities, colourful dragonflies and noisy Marsh Frogs – and in the summer, visitors can rent a small rowing boat to experience it in a whole new way.
Then, harking back to Hythe’s nautical heritage, every two years, the Hythe Venetian Fete takes place – a historic Venetian-style canal festival that brings decorated floats and music for all ages to the area. A traditional event, the Fete sees the Mayor of Hythe join other local mayors in full regalia to enjoy this unique carnival, which concludes with a thrilling firework display!
All of these outdoor experiences offer gentle exercise, fresh air and the opportunity to connect with nature in a variety of ways. We’re delighted to be part of this wonderful community and wish our Sutherland Park residents many happy outdoor adventures here!
