Situated amidst the rolling hills and lush landscapes of the Kentish Weald, Cranbrook is a town steeped in history and charm. Often referred to as the ‘Capital of the Kentish Weald’, it offers a rich tapestry of cultural heritage, architectural beauty and community spirit – all of which go some way to explaining why we chose to build our Wilkes Field development here!
Historical Roots
While the name ‘Cranbrook’ originates from the Old English ‘Cranebroc’, which means ‘Crane Marsh’ and gives a clue about the area’s natural environment, the town’s history is most deeply intertwined with the cloth industry, which flourished during the medieval period. King Edward III’s invitation to Flemish weavers in the 14th century transformed Cranbrook into a centre for cloth production, with the weavers able to leverage generous supplies of local resources like clay and water.
Cranbrook’s architectural heritage is evident in its well-preserved buildings, including the 15th-century Cranbrook Museum and the numerous timber-framed houses that line its streets.
Landmarks and Attractions
Dominating the town’s skyline is the Union Mill, the UK’s tallest surviving smock mill. Built in 1814, this Grade I listed structure has been meticulously restored and offers visitors insights into traditional milling processes.
St. Dunstan’s Church, affectionately known as the ‘Cathedral of the Weald’, is another popular local attraction. Dating back to the 13th century, its impressive tower and historical significance make it a focal point for worshippers and tourists alike.
For those keen to delve deeper into the town’s history, the Cranbrook Heritage Trail offers a self-guided tour of significant sites, marked by informative plaques that narrate the town’s rich past.
Vibrant Community Life
Cranbrook thrives with a strong sense of community. The town hosts various events throughout the year, including the Cranbrook Music Festival and the Cranbrook Apple Fair, celebrating local talent and produce.
Its high street, meanwhile, is a bustling hub of activity, featuring over 60 independent shops, cafes and eateries. From antique stores to contemporary boutiques, there’s something for everyone!
